SHUL STREET FESTIVAL
The completion of an $800,000 renovation was the pretext for a major street celebration outside the 67-year-old House of Israel Congregation in Ste. Agathe on July 25. The event was attended not only by shul members, but by the general public, who were also invited, and saw the participation of such venerable members and supporters as Murray Dalfen and Rose Paull. One of the shul’s rabbis, the late Ephraim Carlebach, was succeeded by his son, Emanuel, and the number of member families has mushroomed from a low of 150 during the 1970s to more than 900 today. Despite a few anti-Semitic incidents in the town over the last few years, Rabbi Carlebach has been active in building bridges with the community. When a McGill University student was assaulted walking to the shul in 2008, a couple marrying there invited the whole town to their wedding, and local schools have visited the shul.
