Scrooge, a 35-minute British film, is one of the earliest adaptations of the Charles Dickens classic. Aficionados swear Sir Seymour Hicks is the best Ebenezer of all time.

Arnold Steinberg was installed as McGill University’s 18th chancellor in a ceremony during the fall convocation. He graduated from McGill (BComm, ’54), taught evening marketing courses there for two years after earning his MBA from Harvard in 1957, and has been a supporter and volunteer ever since to the university, the McGill University Health Centre and the Montreal Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The former supermarket chain executive served for 10 years on McGill’s board of governors… Three distinguished Quebec academics have joined the advisory board of B’nai Brith Canada’s National Task Force on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research: professors Frédéric Guillaume Dufour of the Université du Québec à Montréal, Steven High of Concordia University and Marie McAndrew of the Université de Montréal… Canadian Hadassah-WIZO’s recent art auction honouring artist Yehouda Chaki , raised over $65,000 for health and social services for women and children in Israel. Chaki’s own painting Spring Landscape 8224-A was the pinnacle of the evening’s sales and the proceeds will go directly to an emergency appeal for Hadassah’s daycare centres, including the Montreal-supported Clara Balinsky Daycare Centre at Assaf Harofeh Hospital… Nearly 800 educators from Montreal Jewish day schools and daycares attended the annual professional development conference, sponsored by the Bronfman Jewish Education Centre on the theme “Literacy Across the Curriculum.” Keynote speaker U.S. author Alan November discussed the use of technology in education… Hebrew Foundation School in Dollard des Ormeaux bade farewell to Rabbi Zev Lanton, principal for the past 20 years. He and his wife are moving to Israel, where three of their children live… Rabbi Isaac Jacob Teicher, who was rabbi at the Beth David and Beth Hillel synagogues in Montreal for a total of 27 years, passed away in New York last month, two months shy of his 104th birthday. For many years, he was president of the then-Board of Jewish Ministers. Rabbi Teicher, who lived in Queens for 31 years, is remembered as a dynamic orator and legendary teller of tales.
