Michael Signer, an American Jew and the mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia, had apparently opposed the removal of the contested statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in his city, though Signer’s reasons for preserving it was to keep it as a means of teaching Virginians about the horrors of the Confederacy.
