Canada

Yearning for Yiddishkeit: Until Aug. 29, several restaurants and an exhibition space hosted by the Jewish community group, Makom in the will be displaying Yiddish signage in the Kensington Market area.

Israel

Minister of Silence: After three days of conspicuous silence from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he came out and condemned the Charlottesville attack. According to one Times of Israel staff writer, Netanyahu’s tweet was “vague”.

United States

Michael Signer, an American Jew and the mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia, had apparently opposed the removal of the contested statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in his city, though Signer’s reasons for preserving it was to keep it as a means of teaching Virginians about the horrors of the Confederacy.

Column of the Day

Friends at Last?: P. R. Kumaraswamy published an article yesterday in Tablet magazine describing a blossoming Israeli-Indian relationship. Entited “India’s New Crush on Israel“, Kumaraswamy argues the best way to categorize India’s attitude towards Israel is “enigmatic.”
