Mercator, Slovenia’s largest supermarket chain, has announced that it is succumbing to pressure from boycott, divestment and sanction (BDS) activists and removing Israeli products from its shelves.
As Ynet reports, the products consist primarily of Israeli produce, mostly avocados, dates, and citrus fruits.
The announcement, another win for the BDS movement, comes in the wake of the EU’s decision to implement guidelines for products produced in Israeli settlements, which many argue represents the EU’s double standard when it comes to Israel.
In 2014, Mercator was pressured to boycott Israeli grapefruits but ultimately decided not to after pressure from Jerusalem and other allies.
According to Ynet, Slovenian Ambassador Alenka Suhadolnik was summoned by Jerusalem to the Foreign Ministry to discuss the situation. The report also claims that Israel is concerned the new ban will spread to other countries in which Mercator operates, including Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia.
Last September, Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, passed a resolution to ban all Israeli-made products. Around the same time, Cactus, the largest supermarket chain in Luxembourg, announced that it was effectively banning all Israeli produce from its locations.
