Gaza rocket intercepted over Ashdod in southern Israel

As Israelis were in the midst of Sukkot festivities, terrorists in Gaza launched a Grad rocket deep into southern Israel on Tuesday night. The rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system over the coastal city of Ashdod.

No injuries or damage were reported.

Canadians fund shelter playground for kibbutz near Gaza

Last year Sagit Milshtein Sadi, now a mother of three, set out to build a playground in an underground bomb shelter for the children of her kibbutz, Mefalsim, near the Gaza border in Israel.

Everyone told her it would cost too much money and involve too much aggravation. But she kept pushing, and with the help of donations from generous Canadians, she achieved her dream and the playground is set to open for Rosh Hashanah.

A brief Canadian respite for injured Israeli soldiers

When I met Reuven Magen last month at a Niagara winery, he was sipping ice wine, joking with his pals and admiring the view of the Escarpment. In his baggy shorts and loose tank top, he looked like a West Coast surfer dude, which makes sense, since he spent his early years living in San Diego, Calif., before he and his family moved to the West Bank settlement of Elkana.

Dream big and leave the past behind, Peres advises

TORONTO — “For the sake of our children – all of us – Iran should not become a nuclear power.”

So said former Israeli president and prime minister Shimon Peres at this month’s Toronto Global Forum.

The Toronto forum is held under the auspices of the International Economic Forum of the Americas (IEFA), whose annual summits draw thousands of central bank governors, ministers, business leaders and global economic decision-makers.

Sacrificing truth on the shores of Gaza

Seldom has language been more wilfully and deceitfully manipulated than by political activists who hold in high moral regard and even defend governments or individuals who promote the genocide of the Jewish people of Israel.

Seldom has language been so utterly offensive to facts or to history than by those same political activists.

The proponents of BDS – the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel – are the most persistent and the loudest example of such activists.  Alas, there are many others.

Sherman campus woes

I would like to express my disappointment in the latest UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s announcement of the new and smaller Sherman Campus (The CJN, June 18). What began eight years ago as a $200-million project saw our beloved “Y” torn down, in spite of our pleas to withhold demolition. This caused us to seek other venues throughout the city. In addition, the Koffler Centre is now on Shaw Street.

Liberal party defends Trudeau statements on Iran

Justin Trudeau would “hope to re-open [Canada’s] mission in Iran,” but doing so would be conditional on several factors, a spokesperson for the Liberal leader told The CJN.

“We have been clear that this will depend on many factors, including ongoing human rights abuses and the outcome of negotiations between the P5+1 nations and Iran,” said Kate Purchase, Trudeau’s director of communications.

Gaza reporters suffer from impaired vision

“Is it on? Can I start?”

So begins a video produced by Israel’s Foreign Ministry and uploaded to YouTube last week. The 50-second animated clip follows a nameless news reporter and camerawoman on assignment in Gaza during last summer’s war.

In the opening scene, the reporter announces, “We are here in the centre of Gaza. And, as you can see, the people here are trying to live quiet lives.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry criticizes UN report on Gaza

JERUSALEM — Israel’s Foreign Ministry criticized the report of the UN Commission of Inquiry on the 2014 Gaza conflict which was released June 22. The report said Israel’s military and Palestinian armed groups committed “serious violations” of international human rights law during their conflict last summer that in some cases may amount to war crimes,
