Your daily spiel for Thursday, March 2

In today’s spiel: Another anti-Semitic Montreal imam video uncovered, Haredim live longer – here’s why – and an Israeli comedy show host urges Israelis to wake up and smell the “apartheid.”

Whatever your politics, personal attacks are out of line

Last week, I received an email from Barry and Honey Sherman. I know the Shermans quite well, mostly because of our common interest in charitable causes, especially in the Jewish community. They’re among the major benefactors of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s annual campaign, which provides material support to the poor, seniors, Holocaust survivors, day schools, camps and much more.

Support should not be defined along partisan lines

Jewish communities across the world recently celebrated the Purim holiday.  The story of how political action saved the Jews of Persia, reminds us that it is essential for our community to have a voice in the political process.

In Canada, we recognize the importance of electing Jewish community members at federal, provincial, and municipal levels as well as electing those who understand the issues of importance to us. We must be a full partner of government and democracy, which means having advocates in all political parties.

COMMENT: An open letter to the organizers of IAW

MONTREAL  — As anyone who goes to college knows, Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) in Canada, March 9 to 14, was especially marked by screaming, protests and boiled passions this year. And yet, I can't help but feel how totally and utterly useless IAW has become. So to those who organize Israeli Apartheid Week, let’s get some things straight.

Week of March 12, 2015

How many hamantashen?

What colour is “this hamantashen?” And on the front page, too? (March 5). Please repeat after me: one hamantash, two hamatashen.

Apartheid slur driven by hatred and lies

Every year, with the harsh cold of February comes the harsh rhetoric of the abomination known as “Israeli Apartheid Week.” I would not object if the Palestinian national movement devoted a week to celebrating Palestinian nationalism – including envisioning what a Palestinian state could look like. But making the high point of the Palestinian student calendar a week devoted to demonizing, delegitimizing and libelling the Jewish state is offensive, and it explains why the Palestinians have failed to advance their cause in any real way.

Israeli minority students aim to disprove apartheid myth

A handful of Canadian philanthropists partnering with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) are working with minorities in Israel to bring 12 young leaders to Toronto this month to help fight myths typically propagated during Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) on North American campuses .

The Connecting Leaders in Communities (CLIC) project was established to empower students and young adults to create meaningful relationships with Israel and Israelis, especially among non-Jews, and to promote democracy and shared values.

Israeli film aims to show ‘human face of the IDF’

TORONTO — Eden Adler is, in the most superficial sense, the picture of a soldier: handsome, strapping and eminently self-possessed.

The 22-year-old Israeli was, before completing his military service two months ago, a commander at the Israeli Defence Forces' (IDF) 101st Paratrooper Brigade basic training base, and therefore, at just 21, directly responsible for the safety and operations of 42 recruits and three sergeants.
