He moved to Canada at the age of two and was raised in Kirkland Lake, Ont. In his 2010 interview with The Memory Project, Carl describes his motivation for enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1941. “My father was a veteran of the first world war and spoke perfect German. We used to listen to the shortwave radio of Hitler ranting away about the Jews and it would make me so furious that I wanted to try do something about it.
