Carl Dubin, back row, far right, stands next to his Hebrew Sunday School teacher Mr. Barenholtz, Kirkland Lake, circa. 1930.  Dubin was born in 1922 in Belarus. He moved to Canada at the age of two and was raised in Kirkland Lake, Ont. In his 2010 interview with The Memory Project, Carl describes his motivation for enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1941. “My father was a veteran of the first world war and spoke perfect German. We used to listen to the shortwave radio of Hitler ranting away about the Jews and it would make me so furious that I wanted to try do something about it. So I decided I was going to enlist in the services and chose the air force because I always liked airplanes.” Listen to Carl’s story at the memory project

Support the Media that Speaks to You

Jewish Canadians deserve more than social media rumours, adversarial action alerts, and reporting with biases that are often undisclosed. The Canadian Jewish News proudly offers independent national coverage on issues that matter, sparking conversations that bridge generations.

It’s an outlet you can count on—but we’re also counting on you.

Please support Jewish journalism that’s creative, innovative, and dedicated to breaking new ground to serve your community, while building on media traditions of the past 65 years. As a Registered Journalism Organization, contributions of any size are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
