Last month, Alan Caplan – a British war veteran living in Leeds, England – wrote to The CJN seeking family members of seven Jewish airmen who are buried in nearby Harrogate.
I contacted Caplan the following week, thinking there could be a good followup story and – truth be told – because I have a personal interest.
Twenty-three years ago, I was in Harrogate, a picturesque garden town in Yorkshire, and visited the cemetery that Caplan refers to in his letter. Also, 42 years before that trip, my late father was among a group of young Royal Canadian Air Force members who presented a plaque to the Harrogate Hebrew Congregation expressing thanks for hospitality to Canadian Jewish members of the forces during the war.
