The federal government has pledged $257,645 for an educational project called Beyond the Walls of the Montreal Holocaust Museum, Liberal MP Anthony Housefather announced on Oct. 26.
The project will provide educators in a number of Canadian provinces with tools to teach students about the Holocaust, genocide and human rights. “Through this project, teachers and students will be better equipped to learn about contemporary issues related to human rights and diversity,” said Alice Herscovitch, the museum’s executive director.
The money is being allocated by the Department of Canadian Heritage’s multiculturalism program.

“I know this grant will help the museum in its mission to increase awareness and further educate the public about the genocide of the Jews, the Roma genocide and other crimes perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators,” said Housefather.
Herscovitch said the museum will collaborate on the project with teachers’ associations, universities, Holocaust education centres, Jewish federations and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.
“Together, we will invest in the capacity of Canadians to learn from the past to inform the future,” she said.
