More charges laid against Schacter

Stephen Joseph Schacter, a former teacher at two Toronto-area Jewish day schools, has been charged with more sexual offences.

Schacter, 55, was charged recently with one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference and sexual exploitation. The charges result from a new complainant coming forward, said Det.-Cons. Joel Manherz of the Toronto police Sex Crimes Unit’s Child Exploitation Section.

The latest charges date to the early 2000s, Manherz told The CJN.

In February, Schacter was charged with one count each of gross indecency, sexual interference, and sexual exploitation, and two counts of sexual assault.

Police said those charges date to the 1980s and early 1990s and are based on the testimony of three complainants.

Schacter still faces a charge of possessing child pornography, for which he was arrested last December.

Schacter was a teacher at Eitz Chaim Schools between 1986 and 2004. He was also an office administrator, student supervisor, and supply teacher at United Synagogue Day School (now Robbins Hebrew Academy) from 2004 to 2006.

He was a primary teacher’s assistant in grades one and two at Pleasant Avenue Public School in 2004, and was a private tutor from 2009 until 2011.

Under the terms of his bail, set at $10,000, Schacter was released into the custody of his mother and he cannot have contact with minors.

A publication ban prevents the identification of witnesses.

Schacter is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4 for a pre-trial.
