Seifert Extradited

VANCOUVER — Canadian Jewish Congress welcomed news that Canada had extradited convicted war criminal Michael Seifert to Italy, but it urged quicker action on other Nazi war criminals who lied about their past to get into Canada. Seifert was extradited Feb. 15 after a drawn-out legal process. Seifert, 83, was given a life sentence in absentia by an Italian court in 2000 for nine killings during his service as an SS guard at the Bolzano concentration camp in northern Italy in 1944 and 1945. Seifert began serving his sentence Feb. 16 in a military prison near Naples. In January, the Supreme Court of Canada turned down a request to review a decision allowing his removal to Italy.
