9,000 kg of kosher food collected through CJA food drive in Montreal

Over 9,000 kg of non-perishable kosher food items were collected during the fourth annual Feed the Truck drive, which was led by Federation CJA’s Tikun Olam Volunteers, with the help of Jewish day school students.

Over two days, a Combined Jewish Appeal truck travelled to 10 schools in the Montreal area, to pick up the food that students had collected over the previous month, giving them the opportunity to “feed the truck” by packing it with their donations.

The Federation says that over 18,000 Jews live below the poverty line in Montreal, with children and youth making up 20 per cent of those in need.

The food will be distributed to Federation-funded community organizations in the greater Montreal community that deal first-hand with food security. Among them are Sun Youth, the Jewish Russian Community Centre, Auberge Shalom and Donald Berman Chai Lifeline Montreal.

The participating schools were: Akiva School, Beth Rivkah Academy, Bialik High School, Hebrew Academy, Hebrew Foundation School, Les Écoles Azrieli Schools Talmud Torah/Herzliah, JPPS, École Maïmonide, Solomon Schechter Academy and Académie Yéchiva Yavné.

This year’s drive was chaired by Ilana Krief, Karen Mamane, Kitry Znaty and Jennifer Rosenblum.
