TORONTO — A young professional initiative entitled Music Fills The Soul held its inaugural event Sunday, performing a heartwarming mitzvah (act of kindness) for a roomful of the elderly at Bayview Extendicare.
Numerous artists who all donated their time came together under one roof to showcase their musical and theatrical talents for the residents and their families.
Event chair and principle organizer Julie Ruchlemer sought to fill a void that many retirement residences and care facilities in and around the Toronto area have recently had to face. Entertaining patients and sustaining quality of life beyond the medical care they receive has taken a back seat, as recent cutbacks to provincial subsidies only allow for the upkeep of services and the maintenance of the facilities.
“It was true magic,” said Ruchlemer. “To see my vision come to life with so many incredible people… such huge and generous hearts!”
Thanking all the volunteers, Ruchlemer added: “You all are true leaders and have literally added joy into the lives of so many.”
The team behind the undertaking created an opportunity that delivered smiles to the faces of residents, who because of limited mobility often find it hard to venture out and find entertainment themselves. Treating them to the music of legendary hit-makers from yesterday and today filled their ears and nourished their souls.
