Israel has seven national newspapers, four of which – Jerusalem Post, Maariv, Yediot Achronot and Ha’aretz– publish English editions. Ha’aretz has been variously described as “far left,” “hard left,” “vehemently anti-settlement” and “anti-Zionist.” I wonder why The CJN uses Ha’aretz almost exclusively for its reporting from Israel.

Editor’s note: For stories from Israel, The CJN relies on our freelance correspondents, JTA and Ha’aretz. We have no legal authority to use stories from other Israeli newspapers, nor is it necessarily easy to obtain such rights from the other newspapers.
Ordaining women rabbis
I think Rabbi Avi Weiss needs to be commended for his role in ordaining female rabbis in Orthodox Judaism (“Another rabba,” May 5). He is doing a great service to the Jewish People. Perhaps these women will inspire other young Jewish girls to be more Orthodox and do more Torah study. Rabbi Weiss also reminds us of the value and importance of education, but perhaps most importantly, he is teaching all Jewish youths that if they shoot for the moon, anything is possible. Who are we to deny someone of an education or the ability to follow their dreams?

Misleading headline
I wish to clarify the headline on the article “UWO pressured to decline Islamic chair funding” (May 26), which dealt with a donation to Huron University College. While Huron University College is affiliated with the University of Western Ontario, the college is an autonomous organization with its own governance structure and administration. It has the authority to create its own program chairs and raise the funding to support those chairs, including deciding which donations it will accept. Western has no jurisdiction or influence over Huron University College in this matter.
