The Canadian Jewish News is an omni-media platform which features a news website (thecjn.ca), magazines, podcasts, events and more to promote the exchange of Jewish perspectives, debate and thought leadership on subjects that matter to Jewish life in Canada.
Position Summary
Reporting to the news editor, the reporter will cover news and features primarily for the website. This position works closely and collaboratively across the organization including with other reporters, the podcast director/producers, the podcast hosts, the managing editor and the magazine’s editorial staff.
What you’ll do
- Report and write news stories and features for The CJN’s website. Meet deadlines and be prepared to pivot when news breaks.
- Write stories that are accurate, comprehensive, compelling and relevant.
- Cover breaking news and also write a variety of stories, including profiles, backgrounders, newsy-features, obituaries and human interest stories.
- Pitch your own story ideas to the news editor and work to develop them into news stories.
- Cover stories assigned by the news editor and other editorial staff.
- Work closely with the news editor (and others) to revise and edit stories, when needed.
- The Montreal-based reporter will primarily cover stories in the Montreal area, but must be prepared to cover stories nationally and internationally by phone. The reporter may be asked to travel occasionally.
- Attend (in person) news events in Montreal.
- Be available to work the occasional Sunday or evening as needed
- Attend weekly editorial meetings (remotely) and any spontaneous meetings when news is happening, contribute ideas, sources and any other help to all the projects produced by The CJN.
Qualifications
This position requires a related undergraduate degree, preferably in journalism. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be accepted.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving news environment.
- Strong news writing abilities—traditional news reporting and feature writing.
- Strong knowledge of CP style.
- Familiarity with the Montreal Jewish community.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and remotely.
- A self-starter who is able to generate quality story ideas.
- This is an English-language position, but ability to speak French is an asset.
- Ability to use WordPress (or other online publishing platform).
Salary: $50,000-$60,000.
