Elaine Holstein, the last surviving parent of the four Kent State University shooting victims, died of terminal cancer at 96 on Saturday. Holstein’s 20-year-old son, Jeffrey Miller, was shot and killed on May 4, 1970 by an Ohio National Guardsman during an anti-Vietnam war protest, which came to be known as the Kent State Massacre. Three of the four victims were Jewish.
At least 28 mortar shells were fired from Gaza on southern Israel on Tuesday morning. Most of the shells were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system. A mortar shell landed outside of an Israeli kindergarten in Eshkol region on Tuesday morning, but the school still opened as usual. This was the largest number of projectiles fired on Israel from the coastal strip since the 2014 Gaza War.
Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire, received Israeli citizenship on Monday. The owner of the Chelsea soccer team, has a net worth of US$11.4 billion, which makes him the wealthiest Israeli, and the 126th wealthiest individual in the world. Abramovich’s British visa expired last month and he will have to explain the source of his wealth in order to receive a new visa.
With the Ontario provincial election coming up on June 7, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and B’nai Brith Canada have identified issues of importance to the community, including combating anti-Semitism, improving community security, preventing genetic discrimination and helping the most vulnerable.
