Your Daily Spiel is The CJN’s roundup of trending stories in the Jewish world.

Pesach politicized: The Concordia Student Union and several other student groups organized an event in the CSU lounge called Passover Against Apartheid. While critics claimed it was offensive and culturally appropriative to Jews, the student union fired back that the event initiator is Jewish.

Jews and emotional abuse: A study of Jews in the Prairies revealed that while Jews reported domestic abuse at rates consistent with the general Canadian population, rates of psychological and emotional abuse were higher. The question is why.

Winnipeg Jewish day school alum reunite: If you’re from Winnipeg and you attended Jewish day school in the ’50s, ’60s or early ’70s, you’re long overdue for a reunion. You’re also in luck: said reunion is scheduled for October.

Rabbis say lay off the meat: A group of progressive Orthodox rabbis from around the world is calling on the broader Jewish community to consider what they call the moral and spiritual dangers of meat consumption.

Zara and the alt-right: Clothing chain Zara is hardly a stranger to controversy. And so, it must be noted without (much) ceremony that the retailer has gone and done it again. After releasing a line of denim miniskirts emblazoned with images resembling the “alt-right” hate symbol Pepe the Frog, and after the inevitable social media backlash, Zara withdrew the skirts.

Families won’t reveal names of mohels: Orthodox families in Brooklyn are refusing to identify the mohels who infected four infants with herpes through a controversial circumcision rite.
