CJC Seeks Hate Charges Against Website

TORONTO — Criminal hate charges are being sought by Canadian Jewish Congress against a Toronto-based Muslim website that posted a video address by former U.S. Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke.
The video was scrubbed from the CASMO.ca site April 13, but Congress is pursuing charges under Canada’s hate crimes laws. In its letter to police, Congress calls for a probe of COSMO.ca, which describes itself as the “national platform of Shia Muslims in Canada.”
Congress noted that the 12-minute video, in which Duke espoused conspiracy theories about “Zionist running dogs,” remained on the site for two days after the National Post exposed it. In fact, for a brief period on April 13, a second Duke video was posted to the site.
“The decision to remove the video two days late doesn’t hold much water,” Congress CEO Bernie Farber told the Post. “In fact, they put up a second video and I can only assume they were getting some inside pressure, not the least of which was a police complaint.”
On the site, the Muslim group says it “supports multiculturalism” and “interfaith dialogue.”

Walnut Warning

OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency  widened its public warning and recall last week regarding MK-hechshered walnuts distributed between Jan. 1 and April 4 by Montreal-based Amira Enterprises Inc. that may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled, but can cause serious illness. Symptoms include severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea. The raw, shelled walnuts – branded Amira, Tia and Merit Selection – hail from the United States and were originally said to have been distributed in Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario, but later showed up in Alberta as well. Retailers may also have sold the walnuts unlabelled in bulk bins, so consumers are advised to contact retailers about the source of walnuts they’ve purchased. Walnuts are a mainstay of charoset and other Passover dishes.
