Rabbi Reuven Bulka, known as “Canada’s Rabbi”, served as spiritual leader of Ottawa’s Congregation Machzikei Hadas for 48 years. He died of cancer on June 27 at age 77.

Rabbi Bulka’s local initiatives included his interfaith outreach and work with the United Way and Canadian Blood Services, and he was a fixture at national Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa for many years. He authored some 30 books and dozens of columns in the Ottawa Citizen and was the go-to rabbi for reporters seeking a quote on Jewish issues. In 2010, Rabbi Bulka was awarded the Key to the City of Ottawa. He was named to the Order of Canada in 2013.
