SEASON OPENER
The new theatre season opens with the classic drama Inherit the Wind, at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts, which runs until Nov. 8. The play is a fictionalization of the infamous Scopes “Monkey” Trial” of 1925, when a Tennessee schoolteacher challenged a state law banning the teaching of evolution by introducing his students to Darwin’s theories. HOLOCAUST IN ROMANIA

The Montreal Juniors will wear pink uniforms in their game against the Moncton Wildcasts at the Verdun Auditorium tonight. The uniforms will be auctioned off after the game on local radio stations, with proceeds going to breast cancer research. The Jewish General Hospital is selling tickets for $25, with half going to breast cancer research.
Businessman Amos Sochaczevski, sponsor of the downtown Yom Ha’atzmaut rally for the past few years, is the recipient of the Jerusalem Prize presented by the Canadian Zionist Federation, eastern region. In an unusual move, the prize is also being awarded to three organizations, the Zionist women’s groups Emunah Women, Hadassah-WIZO and Na’amat Canada, for their contributions to the health and welfare of Israeli society… Alberto Mizrahi, dubbed the “Jewish Pavarotti,” performs at the Festival des musiques sacrées in Quebec City on Oct. 24 at the Palais Montcalm… A $54-million goal has been set by Centraide of Greater Montreal, whose campaign concludes Dec. 15. Among the 360 agencies Centraide supports are Federation CJA’s Agence Ometz and the Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors, which last year received, respectively, $320,000 and $275,000.
