Social media communities are toxic echo chambers—but they might be necessary to live a Jewish life

Some news: Bonjour Chai is launching a Slack channel. We’re inviting anyone who wants to engage in a true dialogue about important issues that matter to Canadian Jews to join this national community. Email [email protected] to get a free, exclusive invite. You can also follow and talk to us on Twitter @bonjourchai.

To help us navigate this world, we asked Jesse Brown, host of the popular Canadaland podcast, to join the show. He shares his thoughts on how social media plays a role in building Jewish communities, the role of institutional gatekeeping online and how podcasting is very much like Judaism.

Plus, we discuss the third book in our month-long book club, Gary Barwin’s Nothing the Same, Everything Haunted: The Ballad of Motl the Cowboy.

Support the Media that Speaks to You

Jewish Canadians deserve more than social media rumours, adversarial action alerts, and reporting with biases that are often undisclosed. The Canadian Jewish News proudly offers independent national coverage on issues that impact our audience each day, as a conduit for conversations that bridge generations.

It’s an outlet you can count on—but we’re also counting on you.

Please support Jewish journalism that’s creative, innovative, and dedicated to breaking new ground to serve your community, while building on media traditions of the past 65 years. As a Registered Journalism Organization, contributions of any size are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
