Students clash over Apartheid Week at Columbia U, Stephen Colbert sings Fiddler on the Roof songs, Palestinian official says Kim Jung-Un is "devoted to freedom," and more

Your Daily Spiel is The CJN‘s daily roundup of trending stories in the Jewish world

Canada: The CJN continues its look at adoption in the Jewish community with a segment on conversion issues, consumers in Ontario are still waiting for the province to offer locally sourced kosher chickens, the Next Einstein competition is searching for a Canadian student with a “genius” idea, and in an opinion piece, CJN editor Yoni Goldstein asks if the BDS movement is losing steam in Canada.

U.S.: A U.S. army veteran who recently volunteered with the IDF is running for Congress on prosthetic legs, Jewish agencies will receive $2.8 (US) million from the U.S. government to help aging Holocaust survivors, Jewish Republicans have penned an open letter slamming Donald Trump, and the latest exposed email from Hillary Clinton discloses her affinity for Sabra hummus. Nice.

The Indiana Senate overwhelmingly passed an anti-BDS bill on Tuesday, a member of left-wing group Jewish Voice for Peace disrupted an anti-BDS event at a Chicago synagogue, and pro-Israel students who brought a giant Pinocchio to campus to highlight the lies “inherent in Israel Apartheid Week” were forced to take it down.

Israel: Four Israelis were wounded in the latest series of terror attacks (including one perpetrated by a 14-year-old girl), a Gazan has been indicted for planning terror attacks against Israelis in Ukraine, two Arab Israelis have been arrested on suspicion of plotting an ISIS-inspired attack, and makeshift weapons are reportedly on the rise within the Palestinian territories.

In a recent interview with Israel’s Channel 10, actress Helen Mirren spoke (again) about her opposition to the BDS movement:

השחקנית הלן מירן עומדת לצד ישראל: “החרם על ישראל הוא טעות חמורה”***מירן, אחת השחקניות המוערכות בעולם כיום, גינתה את החרם על ישראל: “יש בישראל אנשים מופלאים” אמרה בראיון למירי מיכאלי. צפו בראיון המלא>>>http://bit.ly/1UjZMR8

World: A coalition of Portuguese journalists have rejected a complaint from the Palestinian Authority over their refusal to use the word ‘murder’ when referring to terrorists, Iran has spoken out against the Gulf states’ decision to label Hezbollah a terrorist group (calling it the “vanguard of resistance against the Zionism regime”), and a Palestinian official openly said that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un is “devoted to freedom.”

Sports: If you’re a soccer fan, you’re likely aware of the hot streak Tottenham Hotspur is currently on (save for their loss to West Ham yesterday). But were you aware that the Spurs are the English Premiere League’s quintessentially Jewish team?

Tech: An Israeli 3D metal printing company developing the world’s first inkjet printing tech for liquid metal has gotten a $25 million (US) investment, and an Israeli startup is looking to bypass Facebook and Google in the race to provide the world with WiFi.

Culture: The cast of Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof joined Stephen Colbert for renditions of Tradition and Matchmaker, and Colbert even dons a fake beard and hat:

Dustin Hoffman apparently boycotted the Oscars Sunday, reiterating Chris Rock’s observation that it’s always been “racist,” Naomi Campbell will visit Israel for the first time to receive an award from former president Shimon Peres, and Tablet likens the situation Kesha is currently in with her producer Dr. Luke to agunot – when Jewish women can’t get divorced because their husbands won’t grant them a ‘get.’

The first trailer for the revamped Ghostbusters movie is here! Let’s see how Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy compare to Bill Murray and Harold Ramis.

Sacha Baron Cohen revealed to Conan O’Brien the other night that there was a deleted scene in Borat that involved a real adult film set.
