TORONTO — About 120 kids deked, dangled and put the biscuit in the basket at last week’s third annual Game On road hockey tournament at the Prosserman JCC at Sherman Campus.
The kids-only three-on-three hockey tournament raised more than $30,000 for three charities on June 22, bringing the three-year total to $140,000, said Alex Voihanski, managing director of JCC Chai Sports.
The money went to support Three to Be, which provides education and therapy for children with neurological disorders, Chai Lifeline, which addresses the social and emotional needs of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses, and Prosserman JCC’s scholarship fund, which assists underprivileged and special needs children participate in sports programs.
“We really wanted to present the message of kids helping kids,” said Voihanski. “It went really quite well.”
Individuals youngsters were required to ante up a $100 fee, which they raised on their own, while $1,000 was charged per team. Youngsters competed in three age categories: 12- and 13-year-olds, 10- and 11- year-olds, and eight- and nine-year-olds.
“It was pretty competitive,” said Voihanski. “There were a couple of shootouts. The kids were really into it.”
In addition to the road hockey component, participants and family members enjoyed an arts and crafts station, entertainment by Magen Boys and a barbecue.
There’s really nothing like it, said Voihanski. “It’s one of the only kids helping kids tournaments out there.”
