WASHINGTON — In the wake of shooting attacks at Jewish sites last month, federal and local law enforcement are training Kansas City Jewish community officials in confronting an active shooter.
The training this coming Friday was organized in part by Secure Community Network, the security arm of national Jewish groups.
Trainers will include Department of Homeland Security officials and Overland Park police. Over 150 Jewish community professionals and lay leaders, are expected to participate, according to KCTV5, a local TV news outlet.
Paul Goldenberg, SCN’s director, said the group had accelerated similar programming in other communities across the country. He praised the Kansas City Jewish Community Center and Federation for putting the program together.
“Kansas City Jewish leaders have really shown how a community responds in the aftermath of a catastrophic event by building resilience and training members,” Goldenberg told JTA.
On April 13, a gunman opened fire at the Jewish Community Center in suburban Overland Park and then at a home for the aged, killing three people, including a 14-year-old boy. Being held for the murders is Frazier Glenn Cross, a white supremacist.
