Junior rosters announced for Israeli hockey tourney

Young Jewish hockey players from Toronto, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, Victoria and Vancouver will represent Canada at the first Under-18 World Jewish Hockey Tournament in Metulla, Israel, this summer.

In all, four Canadian provinces are represented, as the rosters for two Canadian teams in the five-team tournament have been announced. Joining Canada in the junior tournament will be the United States, Israel and France. A senior tournament will take place as well, involving Canada, the United States, Israel, France and eastern Europe (Russia and other countries combined).

Former NHL star Steve Thomas will coach Canada White, while TSN hockey analyst Pierre McGuire will coach Canada Red in the junior event, which runs from July 5 to 15.

“We think we’re sending two teams capable of winning the gold medal,” said Sherry Bassin, general manager of Team Canada. “There is so much Jewish hockey talent in this country, we decided we needed to send two teams instead of one.”
