An El Al flight from Toronto to Tel Aviv made an emergency landing 50 minutes after takeoff when an engine fire forced it to return to Pearson International Airport Dec. 20.

Passengers reported hearing a loud boom before the captain said he’d be dumping fuel over Lake Simcoe in advance of what turned out to be a safe touchdown.

He also sent a mayday to the control tower and asked that emergency crews meet the plane on the ground.

After waiting on the aircraft for more than two hours late into the night, many of the 210 passengers were put up in nearby hotels. Another plane took them to Israel the next day.
