Six Jewish Montrealers named to the Order of Canada

Architect Julia Gersovitz is among six Jewish Montrealers on the list of 105 new appointments to the Order of Canada, which were announced on June 29.

Gersovitz was cited for “her contributions to heritage preservation in Canada and abroad as a respected conservation architect.”

Joining the order as members are:

  • physician Abraham Fuks, a McGill University professor, for his contributions to the advancement of Canadian medical research, notably for his exploration of the immunological features of Type 1 diabetes and of immune-based cancer therapies;
  • Nahum Gelber for his extensive philanthropic contributions towards the advancement of Canadian education and artistic culture, and for his promotion of intercultural understanding;
  • Morton Minc

    lawyer Morton Minc for his commitment to justice based on social rehabilitation and to the creation of innovative programs at the Municipal Court of Montréal, of which he was chief justice;

  • Air Canada president and CEO Calin Rovinescu for getting Canada’s largest airline involved in numerous charitable causes and organizations, and for spearheading humanitarian relief operations following several natural disasters; and
  • clinical psychologist Yvonne Steinert, a McGill University professor of family medicine, for her contributions to the advancement of pedagogical principles, faculty development and new training approaches in Canadian medical education.

A total of 105 Canadians are on the latest list of recipients of the country’s highest civilian honour for outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. They will be invited by Governor General Julie Payette to a ceremony at Rideau Hall to accept their insignia at a later date.
