The always popular Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors (CJCS) Foundation Sports Celebrity Breakfast honours Alan Maislin, who served as president of the Israeli Ice Hockey Federation, and pays tribute to late Montreal Expos catcher Gary Carter, 9:30 a.m. at the Gelber Conference Centre. Chaired by CJCS Foundation president Michael Wagen and MCd by Mike Cohen and Charles André Marchand, the event is due to draw more than 600, and a popular Web radio show, montrealhockeytalk.com, will broadcast live from the event at 10:30 a.m. with Ted Bird and Joey Elias. In an effort to promote Jewish business, Congregation Shomrim Laboker is planning a pre-Passover market March 25, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., where small vendors and larger retailers can set up tables at the synagogue to display their wares and interact with consumers. “We are trying to help the lady selling jewelry at the hospital, the guy selling discounted Passover Haggadahs, the family selling scarves out of the basement, as well as the wider Jewish marketplace,” said associate Rabbi Mendel Marasow. YALDEI FUNDRAISER
More than 1,300 guests attended last month’s highly successful fifth annual fundraising dinner for the Donald Berman Yaldei Development Centre for children with special needs and their families. The event, held at the Crowne Plaza hotel and hosted by Sruli Stern, who came from Britain for the occasion, included attendance by Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, city councillor Lionel Perez; Liberal MNAs Lawrence Bergman and Gerry Sklavounos, chair of the National Assembly’s committee on health and social services, and former city councillor Saulie Zajdel. The dinner also heard from Yaldei founder Rabbi Menachem Leifer; Maor Neim, a boy with autism who movingly described how Yaldei helped him; David Sebag, parent of a child at Yaldei; and Rabbi Benzion Twerski, spiritual leader of a Milwaukee shul.
