CALGARY — The Calgary Jewish Community Council  has created a new award to fund students and faculty at Mount Royal University who are researching the Holocaust and human rights. The $1,800 award, to be handed out annually to pay for research expenses, was created with an $18,000 donation in recognition of the school’s Holocaust Education Program, a 26-year-old initiative that now hosts some 2,700 high school students annually.

Greenspon Joins Star

TORONTO — Edward Greenspon, former editor-in-chief of the Globe and Mail, started a new job last week as vice-president of business development at the Toronto Star and the Star Media Group. Greenspon was editor of the Globe from 2002 until his firing in 2009. In addition to his newly created executive position, he’ll write a weekly column, the paper said.

Drive Seeks $1.15M

HAMILTON — Hamilton’s 75th annual UJA campaign is aiming to raise $1.15 million, its campaign chairs announced earlier this month. The goal for the 2011 drive represents an increase of $80,000, or 7.5 per cent, over last year’s total of $1.07 million and would bring the campaign back to the high it reached in 2008, before the effects of the recession began to be felt, the Hamilton Jewish News reported.
