Speakers Announced
TORONTO — Israeli Vice-Prime Minister Silvan Shalom will address Canadian Jewish Congress’ 29th plenary assembly, to be held May 31 at Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue in Toronto. Also slated to speak is Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who will receive the Saul Hayes Human Rights Award, and Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff. Other speakers will include NDPleader Jack Layton and Bloc Québécois MP Carole Freeman, Congress said.
Honey Pioneer Dies
TORONTO — Jack Grossman, founder of Billy Bee Honey, Canada’s leading honey maker, died April 27 in Toronto at age 92. Grossman served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an aerial photographer in World War II. Upon returning home, he founded Billy Bee. The family-owned firm was bought by U.S. spice giant McCormick and Co. in 2008 for $75 million (US).
Israelis Get Awards
OTTAWA — Two Israelis are among the inaugural 166 recipients of the federal government’s new Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships worth $150,000 toward study at Canadian universities. Shai Sabbah will receive $50,000 a year for three years to study life sciences and psychology at Queen’s University, while Tal Avgar will get the same to study earth sciences and ecology at the University of Guelph.
