Trade Negotiator Dies

TORONTO — Simon Reisman, the feisty and outspoken chief Canadian negotiator of the 1988 Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, died March 8 in Ottawa of cardiac arrest. He was 88. He died in his sleep at the Ottawa Heart institute after having a pacemaker operation a few days earlier. The Montreal-born Reisman joined the federal public service in 1946 and left in 1975 to become a consultant. He returned in 1985 to lead the trade talks.

Chabad Opens Camp

TORONTO — Chabad of Mississauga is starting the first permanent Jewish day camp in the western GTA suburb. Camp Gan Israel, for kids three to 10, runs from July 7 to Aug. 10. Mississauga is home to some 3,000 Jews. For details, visit www.jewishmississauga.org, or call 905-268-4432.
