TORONTO — Air Canada has asked one of its suppliers to correct
“an inadvertent” omission that excluded Tel Aviv on its inflight
seat-back videos.
Air Canada made the request after some of its customers complained that the Israeli destination was missing from the moving-map videos.
Peter Fitzpatrick, a spokesperson for the airline, said “we have talked to the supplier and they are in the process of re-doing the map.”
The map can be accessed by passengers on a television monitor located in the back of the seat in front of them. Television programs, movies and sporting events can also be viewed on the small screens.
Fitzpatrick said the supplier had been asked to match all the destinations on the video map with those in the airline’s enRoute magazine, which includes Tel Aviv. The supplier must now re-do all the software in the fleet, he said.
The issue created a stir in France, where the Union des Patrons et des Professionels Juifs de France, a Jewish organization, reproduced the map. While it showed Israel’s borders, no Israeli cities are highlighted, though Gaza, Amman and even Ajlun, Jordan, are present.
Fitzpatrick said the airline “went to our supplier as soon as it was brought to our attention.”
Air Canada flies daily from Toronto’s Pearson Airport to Israel’s Ben-Gurion International Airport during the peak summer months.
