Mensch on a Bench

Mensch on a Bench, a plush doll and book set that aims to put the “funnukah back in Chanukah,” has exploded in popularity and sales throughout the U.S. and Canada since its inception two years ago.

The book tells the story of Moshe the Mensch, who was in the temple when Judah and the Maccabees won an important war. With only enough oil for one night, Moshe volunteered to watch over the Menorah while everyone else was sleeping. What a Mensch!

This year, founder Neal Hoffman has kept Moshe busy, working on an animated television special, introducing new merchandise, and also teaming up with Office Depot’s popular holiday website Elf Yourself, which allows you to photoshop your head onto a dancing elf, and send it as a card to loved ones. Now, you can do the same, but as Moshe the Mensch. “It’s really a fun experience,” Hoffman tells The CJN, “you can make yourself into a mensch, do the hora, and get chased by dreidels.”

Download the Elf Yourself app to try it out. Popular Jewish a cappella group, the Maccabeats, provide the background music:

“I feel like there’s a real need for this, and that’s why there’s been this incredible response,” Hoffman says. “I feel like if I create the next Santa Claus, then I’ve done something wrong. This book is all about Jewish traditions, and reinforcing those traditions, like playing with dreidels, eating latkas and Chanukah gelt, etc.”

To win a free Mensch on a Bench book/doll set, see above for contest details. Special thanks to Neal Hoffman for donating the Mensch on a Bench sets.
