In our 2015 Chanukah playlist, we mention that Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ 8 Days (of Chanukah), from their latest holiday album, It’s A Holiday Soul Party, is possibly our favourite new original Chanukah song in recent memory.
The song is a silky smooth number that’s brimming with funky overtures and horns; definitely not your normal modus operandi for a Chanukah song. Regardless, Jones makes it work, with lyrics about Manischewitz wine, latkes, your uncle Saul, and how Chanukah is a better holiday than Passover.
Today, coinciding with the first day of Chanukah, the group released an animated video for the colourful song, directed by illustrator Rich Terrana.
While we’ve enjoyed the multitude of Chanukah parodies, it’s nice to have an original Chanukah song that we can put on repeat. Thanks Sharon.
