A Musical Memorial: The Ger Mandolin Orchestra is the brainchild of Israeli-American Avner Yonai, who was inspired to found the group after seeing a tattered photograph of his grandfather playing in a prewar Jewish mandolin orchestra in the Polish town of Gora Kalwaria (Ger in Yiddish). The musical group was conceived as a memorial project for his own family and the orchestra members, most of whom perished in the Holocaust.

The Ashkenaz Foundation presents the 11-member Ger Mandolin Orchestra in concert as part of Holocaust Education Week. George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St. Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m. $36. www.tocentre.com, 1-855-985-2787.
